Lorena, Corey and I connected with each other from day one, and I was so honored and excited to plan their personalized wedding day. Theirs was an untraditional micro-wedding, at the beginning of winter, with nods to Lorena’s Mexico City roots.
Challenge #1 was finding the venue for their celebration - we had a couple options, but as soon as we walked into the plant filled space at The Annex - we knew this was the feel that would set the tone for the day. Challenge #2 was finding and supporting as many BIPOC wedding vendors as we could!! I was in the beginning stages of starting Colorful Weddings, and it was perfect timing. Lorena & Corey and their friends were incredibly supportive, saw the need for it as an engaged, multicultural couple, and offered up so much advice and encouragement. AND - I got to work with and meet some awesome vendors! Challenge #3 was figuring out ways to honor Lorena’s Mexican background, with a modern style, and in a way that made her feel at home, in December, in Minnesota!
The color palette, subtle accents and patterns in the tablescape, and the greenery creeping through the entire space were reminiscent of Oaxacan pottery, traditional textiles, and the lush atmosphere of Lorena’s former home. #Iunderstoodtheassignment
We did not go with Mexican food! As travelers and foodies, Lorena and Corey debated between a few options - and we settled on some of their favorite Indian indulgences from India Spice House. We added some lightness to the heavier meal with salads from French Meadow, just down the street.
The final challenge was making sure the day went without a hitch. Now, we did end up having a last minute convenience store run, but overall had an amazing evening filled with laughter, love, and joy.
